Meet The UNESA Board

You voted, and now your new board is here. We get to know them a little better, find out what they are passionate about, and share some of their fears, hopes and obsessions

It has been just over a month since the elections occurred and the new UNESA Board took office. While they’ve been working hard to put together their strategic plan (which you can find out more about in the presidents report), we’ve been getting to know them all.

There are a few familiar faces, including a previous Nucleus editor, and lots of new ones.

What are you passionate about?

Providing access and ability for all to engage in key areas. At a student level, this means giving a voice to students at all tables.

What is your position’s goal during the 2017-2018 UNESA Board?

As President, my goal is to ensure that the Board delivers on our strategic goals and objectives, ensuring that all students are represented without fear or favour as we work with key stakeholders to ensure a greater student experience at UNE.

What’s a fun fact about you?

I am well known for loving UNE's house red, with my horrid taste continuing with my love for trashy american dramas and chai lattes.

What are you passionate about?

I’m passionate about the community and helping people.

What is your position’s goal during the 2017-2018 UNESA Board?

My main personal goal is to push advocating for mental and sexual health on campus. I’d like to see UNESA support and act in the best interest of the people who elected us and who we exist for: the students!

UNESA has struggled in the past in terms of engagement and even advocacy to an extent. This year is our chance to really change the student perspective of UNESA and get our hands dirty for students!

What’s a fun fact about you?

I’ve played trombone for 11 years, I am a NSW SES volunteer, one day I hope to pat all the dogs.

What are you passionate about?

I am very passionate about youth advocacy and community engagement, as every young person deserves the right to get out of bed with a purpose; that is, to fulfil their potential.

What is your position’s goal during the 2017-2018 UNESA Board?

For me, in this position, my goal is to make a contribution - to help UNESA evolve through education and experience; to make UNE a better place for those coming after.

What’s a fun fact about you?

I have a deep love of stationery and musical theatre. My passion for the law comes from a deep seeded love of performing. I enjoy classical music more than anyone should and I am an enthusiastic bell ringer in the Armidale Cathedral.

What are you passionate about?

I’m passionate about politics and coffee. It’s oddly specific, but photos of rainy cities and the Netflix original series, House of Cards

What is your position’s goal during the 2017-2018 UNESA Board?

As the Treasurer, it is my goal and purpose to make sure that everyone plays and pays their own part in making sure all students, both On and Off-Campus, get all the services that are owed to them. Just being party of the UNESA board means that all I want to achieve right now is student satisfaction; not in me, but in themselves and the university that we all attend.

B.S. aside though, I honestly want all of you to have a sick time at uni, get awesome grades, and create the best memories that you’ll carry with you for life

What’s a fun fact about you?

I’m terrified of watermelon, I hate blue pens, my favorite colour is purple and I could spend hours and all of the money on stationery shopping.

What are you passionate about?

I’m passionate about the reclamation and revival of my ancestral language ‘Anaiwan’, along with the fight for Aboriginal self-determination and land rights.

What is your position’s goal during the 2017-2018 UNESA Board?

My primary goal is to ensure mechanisms are put in place for genuine and effective representation of Indigenous students in UNE’s decision making processes. Consistent with the principle of self-determination, Indigenous student concerns/ideas need to be heard and acted upon.

What’s a fun fact about you?

I am a postgraduate research student in BCSS, and my thesis title is ‘decolonizing the Anaiwan language’. I love MC Hammer. #2Legit2Quit

Equity Officer

B.Historical Inquiry & Practice

Off-Campus

What are you passionate about?

I am passionate about: justice, I don’t like unjust situations, correct grammar and spelling, animals and history! I love history and like to travel to uncover historic places and events.

What is your position’s goal during the 2017-2018 UNESA Board?

As Equity Officer I would like to see more equity between what on campus students are offered, and what they experience compared to what off campus students are offered, and their experiences as there is quite a chasm at present. Every student should be offered the same learning standards regardless of whether they are on or off campus.

What’s a fun fact about you?

Fun facts about me: I am a pilot and owned a Jet Fighter and Russian Fighter trainers. I have a 26 year old cat, a 14 year old cat with an acquired brain injury, and a 14 year old deaf and blind dog. My guilty pleasure is playing Fallout 4, I try to like Skyrim but haven’t succeeded so far. I run various historical tours and ghost tours in Victoria and I have had a book written about my work.

B.Education (Secondary Arts)

On-Campus

What are you passionate about?

I am passionate about education, and in particular, equal education for all. I value the importance of balancing academics and discipline in education, whilst also seeking out an element of socialisation here and there (Stro, anyone?). I am also incredibly passionate about television, especially The Walking Dead and Fear the Walking Dead, Shameless and Game of Thrones. I am also passionate about success. For anyone who knows me, I always put in more effort than required, whether that be in terms of the number of tasks I undertake, the number of units I enrol in, or the number of commitments I make. 110% effort is required and valued alway

What is your position’s goal during the 2017-2018 UNESA Board?

Whilst we are still in the fundamental planning stages of developing our goals, one of mine is definitely to enhance the on-campus student experience. Living in Armidale can be a tough gig for people - we have pretty poor nightlife, it is far away from pretty much every major city in Australia, and, let’s face it, the cold is almost post-apocalyptic. Creating a homeliness away from home is so important for mental health, physical and emotional well being, and I think finding that happy place when being so far from home (for most students, anyway) is essential to commitment and success at a tertiary level.

What’s a fun fact about you?

I do two degrees (I don’t know if many people would consider that fun, though?). I am actually lowkey addicted to study... I have an unhealthy obsession with Rosita and Sasha from The Walking Dead, and Ellaria and Olenna from Game of Thrones. I am addicted to chocolate milk.

Undergrad Rep

Bachelor of Languages

On-Campus

What are you passionate about?

I’m passionate about people. I love getting to know someone, letting them express themselves and their passions. There’s a lot of interesting individuals out there, and I feel so few of them have had the opportunity to share their story. And we don’t listen to people, we’re always too busy, too self-absorbed. Next time someone wants to talk, listen and appreciate. Life’s richer when we take time to listen.

What is your position’s goal during the 2017-2018 UNESA Board?

In my position as a UNESA Undergraduate Representative I hope to engage more students to make the UNE experience a fun and inclusive one. Ultimately, I would like to have every student feel that their voice is heard, to know that we want the best for them. So if you see me around, come have a chat!

What’s a fun fact about you?

I’m crazy about food. Good food is the way to my soul, and I enjoy cooking just to relax. Hence, I’m also a regular at the gym...

External Rep

B.Science (Agriculture)/B.Teaching

Off-Campus

What are you passionate about?

I am extremely passionate about Agriculture and the need for students to gain a concept that there is more to Agriculture than just being a farmer. I believe being a teacher that can showcase some other aspects of Agriculture than just the basics will allow for more interest and opportunities for future students of the university and for the Agricultural industry.

What is your position’s goal during the 2017-2018 UNESA Board?

The External Representative’s goal is to provide external students with the same educational opportunities as the internal students tackling all types of problems and discrepancies that could possibly impact their education and possibly their lives. Within doing so, it is a major goal of UNESA and my main role to:

  1. Increase Student Engagement
  2. Grow partnerships with Academics and Administration
  3. Improve operational resilience
  4. Develop and deliver an advocacy platform

What’s a fun fact about you?

I am from South Africa and have been in Australia for 15 years. I love my animals like they are my children and could probably open a small zoo with the amount of animals and variety that we have.
