Balls to the Wall: Aussie Cricketing Scandal
Full disclosure, I know almost nothing about cricket. It’s not a sport that really inspires me to care. That being said, strap in as I explain the latest cricketing scandal that’s set the cricketing world on fire.
The past few weeks have been pretty rough for Aussie cricket fans. People are throwing around terms like “dark times” and “devastation”. Little kids have even stopped believing in their once role models. People are acting like cricket has died! What happened to make people denounce cricket and leaving top athletes in disgrace?
What we can work out from the rumours is this. In a recent game between Australia and South Africa, one keen-eyed producer spotted Aussie cricketer Cameron Bancroft up to something dodgy. What he was up to was ball tampering. Ball tampering is when a cricket player purposefully alters the condition of the ball, to cheat basically. It’s about here that things get weird.
So, it’s game day and our Aussie players are up to something. On advice from our keen-eyed producer, Bancroft is asked over. In a fit of panic, he shoves the offending item, into his pants. When asked to explain his actions and what he had in his hands, he told the umpires that it was a bit of sticky tape with some dirt off the ground that had fallen off his kit. Innocent enough right? Well it turns that the ‘sticky tape’ in question was actually sandpaper according the investigative cricket authorities.
So, a cricketer has cheated and lied and shoved his hands down his pants on international television. Not a good look. If that doesn’t ruin our reputation as a credible sporting nation, the rumours and scandals are even worse. Cricketing greats like Aussie Captain Steve Smith and David Warner are now in the mix. It’s speculated the whole thing was planned! Aussie cricket is up the creek without a crease to stand behind, you know what I mean?
If you’re not cricket-minded like me you won’t see the point of losing sleep and life will continue as normal. That being said, doesn’t mean I’m unsympathetic to the cricket fans. It must suck to have this happen to your favourite sport and some of your sports star players. It still won’t make me watch the cricket though. But I am excited to see what else happens in sport this 2018.
